Located in a historic convent, Quinta Real, formerly named Camino Real, can’t fail to impress. Its size and staff give it a resort atmosphere, where guests can lounge in their choice of several landscaped courtyards, swim in the heated pool and sunbathe in deck chairs. While it has no gym or spa, the hotel has a restaurant (and room service), a bar, a gift shop and a travel agency. It hosts two weekly shows: an indigenous dancing show on Fridays and a mariachi show on Saturdays. Spacious rooms boast temperature control, WiFi, coffee makers, mini bars, flat-screen TVs, small coffee tables, desks, chairs, safes and iHome alarm clocks with iPod docks. Bathroom amenities extend beyond the usual soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion to free bottled water, robes, scales, toothbrushes, mouthwash, nail files and even loofahs. Most of the rooms have windows, but some are small, so it's worth asking about that when booking.

If you've got money to spend on a hotel in Oaxaca, the Camino Real (also known as the Quinta Real) is the place to do it. This sprawling, high-end hotel inhabits a former convent built in 1576, and the owners have preserved the history as much as possible. Weekly dancing and musical performances are held in the convent's cavernous central chapel, and old frescoes are visible on many of the hotel's walls and archways. The Camino Real is one of the few hotels in Oaxaca's historic center with a pool, a nice amenity after a day of sightseeing under the hot sun. The hotel's location is a centralized as it gets, just a block from the historic Santo Domingo church and a short walk to Oaxaca's main plaza. Rooms are comfortable and well-stocked with toiletries, coffee makers, safes, minibars and clock radios equipped with iPod/iPhone docks.

This Hotel used to be a convent centuries ago. It is has been loveling restore and each room is different due to it former life as a convent. The rose gardens are stunning. In the evening we would sit in our second story suite open the big wooden shutters out the court yard and watch the bougainvillea swaying in the night breeze keeping time with the marimba player below.
The hotel is situated on a cobble stone street and main town square is within walking distance. Plan to go back again and enjoy Oaxaca's beautiful people and food.
