Rano Raraku is the site where the stones for the moai were cut out of the mountains, and probably the moai that you see in the pictures. There's a small visitors center and picnic area. A trail takes you to the quarry and moai.

Many Easter Island pictorial published were likely to have taken at Rano Raraku which is the quarry where most of the Moais were carved out, by hand and stone tools, directly from the volcanic crater.
Our visit was amazing as we were able to see Moais in different stages of "production" and transportation. Rano Raraku was last active in the early 1800 as a quarry of the Moais, but it continues to be active today as a must visit spot on Easter Island to see various Moais in their glory.
