The second-largest city in South Dakota, Rapid City makes for a great starting point for a road trip through the state's famous national parks and monuments. The kids in your group will love going on a scavenger hunt for life-size bronze statues of all of the presidents.

Nice small town that is a convenient point to exploring the natural beauty of the black hills, as well as visiting Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial

This is a good place to stay if you're visiting Mount Rushmore. It's big enough to have some decent hotel and restaurant choices, but close to the destination too. The people seemed nice.

The coolest thing about Rapid City is the life-sized statues of U.S. Presidents in the downtown area. We didn't spend a lot of time here, but it was a very neat downtown area.

It is a good starting point for visiting the Black Hills. Downtown is small with brick buildings well preserved. The Corn Exchange bio restaurant is a must go place. There are also nice cafes. We couldn't find a nice place where to sleep.

Rapid City is the entry point into South Dakota since that's where the airport is.

Description

Rapid City is the second largest city in South Dakota, and is known as the “Gateway to the Black Hills.” This explains the city’s other name, “The City of Presidents,” because it’s from here that you can access Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the Black Hills. Along the way you can check out the unique reptiles at the Reptile Gardens, or some extinct reptilians at the Dinosaur Park. If embracing the great outdoors in the Black Hills seems like too much hard work, Rapid City has a lively cultural scene. Look out for the life-size bronze statues of all the American presidents littered around downtown, visit the Museum of Geology, catch a show at the Black Hills Community Theatre, or wander the Dahl Arts Center.
