Just a boat ride, and short hike from town and super worth it. It is a shear slot canyon with a beautiful swimming hole in the bottom. It is salt water and super deep so you can hurl yourself into it from the walls, and snorkel the tropical fish within it. Spectacular!!!

One of the highlights of our Galapagos trip was snorkel the waters in and around Gordon Rocks. The rock formation is what's left of an ancient volcano. It's famous for schools of hammerheads and circulating currents. It's not a beginning dive site. I remember swimming with sea lions, watching a penguin zip by, admiring an eagle ray. Something going on ...

One of the coolest geologic features of the Galapagos. If you're not in or on the water, be sure to get up into the Santa Cruz highlands and explore these caves. It's little eerie to think about them filled with molten lava, but the remains are spectacular!

Here at this private farm/sanctuary is where visitors can roam the reserve and search for giant tortoises. Rancho Primicias provides a safe haven for the otherwise wild giant tortoises to roam and for visitors to get a chance to see the gentle giants up close.

Because a section of the lava tube collapse, an opening was created for us mere humans to set foot into a long "dried out" lava tunnel. Descending in the tunnel was like exploring the abyss. This was going to be an adventure as once inside, there are climbing and walking on uneven surfaces that red hot lava once flowed. Escaping ...

The Puerto Ayora Pier is the main hub of everyone who is island hopping amongst the archipelago. On our visit, they are still renovating the pier but we can tell once it is completed, things will be less chaotic. This pier is where passengers will coordinate with water taxis to get to the boats that they need to get on ...

El Garrapatero is a beautiful beach located on the north side of the Santa Cruz Island. The water is blue, clear, and relatively calm (great for swimming & shore snorkeling) and the sand is fine fine fine...and white. Behind the beach there is a fresh water lake that in most other years was home to flamingos and herons. However, on ...

One of the most impressive geologic formations of the Santa Cruz highlands. The giant sinkholes resemble twin volcanic craters, and were in fact created by collapsing lava tubes. This is an excellent spot for hiking in the Galapagos, with an interesting terrain of Scalesia forest and many unique highland birds you won't see on the shorelines of the Galapagos Islands.

Los Gemelos, the twins, are two massive craters that were created by collapsed lava tubes. Now the two craters are covered by Scalesia forest. Scalesia trees are also known as "Darwin's finches of the plant world" because on the different islands within the archipelago, different subspecies of these same trees can be compared to demonstrate adaptation.

Tortuga Bay is about 15 min. to the harbor. It's free, you need at least 30 minutes walking inside the park to reach the beach. You can see a lot of iguanas mariñas and a "opuntia" forest, a Galapagos giant cactuses, the only species of cactuses that grows like a tree.
