For years I've been passing this place by in favor of other Big Sur spots with which I'd been more familiar. Big Mistake. Much like the Big Sur River Inn, the real charm of this place cannot be judged from the roadside, and it is only once you explore the interior and backside grounds of the restaurant do you realize what a gem it is. Crammed between highway 1 and a gorgeous stand of towering redwood trees is this mountain lodge-style grill. Inside, there is a roaring fireplace, dark wood environs, and a cozy, little cubby-hole bar overlooking the redwoods. Go out the back door, and there is a dining deck set right within and below the immense redwood trees.
Due to the great summer weather, I opted to dine on the forested deck and enjoyed a delicious Carolina Pulled Pork Sammy, whilst Stellar jays hopped around the table and rays of sunshine twinkled through the redwood branches far above, playing tricks off my golden amber pint of Prohibition beer. I was really trying not to make a Lord of the Rings reference here, but this is what I imagine eating with elves at Rivendell must be like. Oh, and almost forgot, the service was great!
