Man, I can't say enough good things about this refugio. Perched between the Cotopaxi glacier and it's alpine lava field, the place feels like a cozy mountain lodge on Mars. This is where you stay over to climb the Cotopaxi Volcano, although sleepovers are also possible if you just want to experience the glacial environment without the harrowing climb. The place is set up as dorms, so you're in a bunk bed with a communal kitchen. However, as this is one of the most popular climbs in South America, it's a lively, warm place, bustling with activity, roaring fires and youthful energy. I dream easier at night remembering places like this are out there in the world - it's a drop of adventuresome goodness in a world otherwise going haywire. All this, at the foot of one of the most dramatically beautiful volcanic cones in the world...Recommended for:
