This is a bustling hotel, close to the Convention Center, Penn Quarter and Chinatown. Given its location, it's popular with the business crowd.
There are lots of nooks, seats and tables in the lobby. When I visited, business was being conducted everywhere! I loved the library, where people were curled up with their reading.
For those on the go, there's a very large fitness center and spa, a little gift shop, a shoe shine stand, and, most importantly for me, a Starbucks on the premises!

One of my favorite spots in Washington. The location is especially convenient for business, not bad for tourism as it is close to the convention center and Chinatown. The rooms were normal size with high end amenities. Parking as everywhere else in downtown DC is expensive but valet is available. Starbucks in the lobby and two lounges which are staffed by top notch bartenders.

The Renaissance is located at a convenient, walkable distance from attractions in DC and from the excellent Metro subway system. We stayed in one of the newly renovated rooms located on the 14th floor (although apparently not all floors have been renovated, as of Oct 2012). Our room was extremely modern in decor and it was a cozy place to "live" for a week. The bed was one of the most comfortable we've experienced in a hotel.
The hotel itself has a fairly modern feel in the lobby area. There is a Starbucks, a bar, and a large open area with comfortable couches. But throughout the hotel you are reminded that it is an older building, and in no place is that more apparent than in the elevators. On our side the of hotel, the elevators took forever to arrive when called, and they feel old and clunky. I attended a conference at the hotel, and the conference rooms and general infrastructure were ok.
Location: The hotel is only a couple blocks from Chinatown, where there is a major Metro station (Gallery Place - Chinatown) that's only a stop or two from the National Mall and all the museums and monuments located there. Those same attractions are only about 8 blocks away, and the White House is about 6 blocks. There are a lot of restaurants in the Chinatown area, although they are mostly chain restaurants.

If my conference wasn't held downstairs in the convention center, I would have never stayed here. The rooms were tiny, their room service isn't 24 hours, and the service was bad. There is however, a starbucks downstairs in the lobby, and convenient taxis to catch downstairs.

Good convention hotel...nothing spectacular but great if you're working at Convention Center across the street. Rooms are tired and room service is slow...about an hour wait on one night...
Overall good attitude from staff...
Great lobby but poor choice of restaurant, Starbucks inside hotel is great...
Wouldn't consider this for vacation, but great for business hotel...just improve food choices, speed up room service and I'll add another star...
