My favorite restaurant in Monterey! It adds a much needed dash of class to this sleepy tourist-town's nightlife. Gorgeous bar, great food, fascinating location - nothing really compares to it.
There are fire pits in the patio area, hidden behind a giant hedge from the road itself. It's a lot of fun to escape the ocean wind for awhile. Or, go inside to sit at prohibition-era themed bar for a spell. The rest of the house (mansion, really) is full of great ambiance, and the staff is incredibly professional and courteous.
Make it a point to visit here.

Although I only had the opportunity to stop in for drinks, 1833 is officially my new favorite restaurant in Monterey. Opened during the summer of 2011 with a team of world class chefs, designers and big city restaurant investors, the place was meant to merge the edge of a New York City lounge within a stately historic home in the center of town. The staff are extremely courteous and outgoing. One even gave my companion and I a tour of the place, explaining the settings of the many opulent dining areas, as well as the ideas behind the bars and lounges. There's a place in this venue for just about any mood you might have - from elegant dining, to a coffee house-like lounge, to festive party dining and a bar area worthy of a big city club. The hardest decision for us was whether to enjoy the eclectic interior or to lounge on sofas around the fire pits in the patio area. We ended up having to do a little bit of both to satisfy our urges!
I hear the food here is spectacular and I want to come back for dinner soon. Reservations are recommended. And, oh! Don't forget to ask your server about the friendly house ghosts...
