Richmond is the capital of the state of Virginia. It is steeped in the history of the country going back to Patrick Henry's pre-revolutionary speech, "Give me liberty, or give me death," that was made at St. John's Episcopal Church in Richmond. Richmond also served as the capital of the Confederate States of America from 1861 to 1865. If you're interested in the history of America, Richmond and it historical sites are a must see.

Richmond is a unique blend of traditional Southern gentry meets an explosion of alternative/ progressive nonconformity. There is nowhere in this country with such striking differences in subculture and community. I believe Richmond is the birthplace of the "hipster". Growing up here, I always felt a little bit like a fish out of water; however, the "fan", Carytown and downtown areas always shared a familiar sense of angst and creative intrigue.
I will always have a warm place in my heart for this classically historical world, the beautiful tree-lined streets, the memories of farmland replaced by urban sprawl, and the friendly people waving to you on the river by boat, or at the intersection in your car.
A wonderful place to grow up and special place to visit.

As the capital of Virginia the city has many buildings that are historically and architecturally important. The city is easy to wander around in and we plan on visiting again to get into more of the history.

One of the U.S.'s most important historical cities. The state of Virginia has played an over-sized role in the early development of the U.S. For fans of colonial and civil war era Richmond is an absolute must. Check out many fine colonial mansions, and learn more about the civil war and the importance of Richmond, the capitol of the confederacy.

I enjoyed the oldness and history of the city immensely. In fact, Richmond really exceeded my expectations in that respect. The historical areas are very walkable for a southern city, although driving around is more challenging for those who don't know the city.
