    Casa da Matriz

    4.5
    3 reviews

The concept may have worn out a bit, but still a fun place in Rio: an eternal house party, with 2 dance floors and lots of hangout areas with sofas and video games and hip shops etc. Starts late and finishes when the bakeries are on their 3rd batch of warm bread, so you can satisfy at least one appetite.

    Bip Bip

    4.5
    2 reviews

One of the few great samba destinations in the Zona Sul (the southern, beachside districts of Rio), Bip Bip hosts legendary samba de mesa, informal samba played around a table. The setting is humble — just a tiny space with no seating, nor drinks apart from a fridge full of beer — but when the musicians strike up those infectious ...

    Circo Voador

    4.5
    7 reviews

One of Rio`s funnest live music venues, mostly because of its origins in the Cazuza 80s. Fits around 4000 people, so it is large enough to get big names in Brazilian music, while give the audience intimacy with the stage, specially due to the amphitheatre design. Something always on every day. Check their agenda as the big names sell out ...

    Fundição Progresso

    4.5
    4 reviews

The place is not comfortable or pretty, but they do get big names in Brazilian music, pack it with 5k partiers and force the band to perform longer than their usual. So in this sense, it is a great place to hear live music, if you know the bands. So check the line up on their site.

    Quinta da Boa Vista

    4.5
    3 reviews

The Quinta da Boa Vista is a park area that includes the former Imperial residence (now the Museu Nacional). The Portugese Royal Family of Dom Joao VI, and Dom Pedro I lived here, as did the Brazilian King, Dom Pedro II (Abraham Lincoln once said that Dom Pedro was the foreign ruler that he most wanted to meet).

    Leblon

Didn't find any Leblon Cachaca here! Oh, oops that's probably a brand that's sold in the States! This beach is a lot more low key, housing may be cheaper here as well. Ideal spot for seclusion.

Rio's classic. You can view most of the city from here. The only problem is that it is too crowded.

The Rio Carnival is the biggest carnival in the world, welcoming over 2 million people a day to the streets of Rio de Janeiro. Hard Rock Café

    4
    4 reviews

Driving south from Rio it takes almost an hour to get to the Hard Rock Cafe in Barra da Tijuca (ran into a lot of traffic). When we got there, we were informed that the Hard Rock Cafe was closed that night for a private party. So we drove all that way and back, and all I got was this ...

    Copacabana

    4.5
    86 reviews

This is one of the more touristy beaches in Rio, but still my favorite. The water is unbelievably nice (save for a surprisingly strong undertow), the sand is beautiful, and the scene is active without being overcrowded. At night its gorgeous and active as well.

    Ipanema Beach

The Girl from Ipanema..or was it the Boy from Ipanema as Diana Krall said it best. A more relaxed area of Rio, where you can actually relax and the landscape is more lush. Enjoy an Acai bowl and scenery Ipanema has to offer. You can find inexpensive travel agencies at the malls in this area and their prices tend to ...
