The Rio Grande do Sul is a state with a unique culture and even within it there are many cultural differences, because the state itself has received immigrants from all around the world, mainly from Germany and Italy. In my city 95% of people have German surnames, and the city has a culture that is a mixture of German and 'gauchas' traditions. 'Gaucho' is the word we use in Brazil for people born in Rio Grande do Sul.

Visiting the state of Rio Grande do Sul, one has the feeling of being in Europe without having ever left Brazil. It is the landscape of meadows brightened by flowers or occasionally whitened by snow. It is the architecture and folk traditions with their German or Italian imprint. The state boasts a diversified cuisine, in which the churrasco, the Brazilian style barbecue, shares the honors with the sophisticated café colonial, a southern version of the English high-tea.
