It is in the desert and it can be hot. Westerner lived there for three years. No night life and frankly not a readily accessible tourist destination. But it has its beautiful parts like the old city walls etc. The souq shopping can be a lot of fun. Good luck getting there.

Riyadh is not as bad as you might think.. in fact it is not at all what you would think from outside the country. The place is one large strip of Malls, Offices and high rise tower blocks. English signs compete with Arabic ones and nobody walks anywhere. The desert makes itself known by the incredible dry heat that rips the moisture from your skin, hair and everywhere else, and the dust that can blow in with storms so that you feel like you are walking through an orange Fog which clogs your eyes and nose. This is a city of business and nothing else, made harshly obvious by the fact that everybody is here to work, not play, and so there is very little to see or do. Of course hovering over it all is the Kingdom tower, known affectionately as the Giant bottle opener, constantly reminding you of the lack of legal alcohol
