The hike to Rob Roy Glacier is a must if in the Wanaka area. You can actually see the glacier (far in the distance) from the shores of Lake Wanaka, downtown. But, it is a bit of a drive to get to the trail head. It is a medium intensity hike (there are one or two steep bits) that is lovely the entire way...from large open fields with grazing cattle to densely vegetated wet areas full of ferns and then to the foot of the stunning Rob Roy glacier where you can usually see several waterfalls that have formed from areas of melting ice.
