Who knew you could visit a wineries right in Alameda? Rockwall was opened back in 2008 by the Rosenblum Family. This is the same (founders of Rosenblum Winery (though that brand is no longer owned by the family).
The old Alameda Naval Air station has become home to a number of enterprises looking for large spaces afforded by the former military buildings and hangars on the former base. Which has made it a near ideal location for making and warehousing wine. Rosenblum Cellars is actually just down the road, though I didn't have time to stop by there. A number of other spirits manufacturers are also in the the neighborhood (at least one brewery and another distillery).
Back on the subject of Rockwall. They specialize in Zinfandels, though they produce quite a few other varietals as well. I highly recommend their 2011 Hendry Vineyard Reserve Zin. It was full bodied, and complex, without the heavy acidic aftertaste characteristic of some zins.
The tasting room is located right on the edge of the former tarmac, and while it is basically a sea of concrete, you can see an unobstructed view of San Francisco in the distance, which makes this place popular for parties and events.
I'll be back soon.Recommended for:
