    Colosseum

The Colosseum is pretty cool to take a look at, even if you don't go inside. Would definitely recommend at least stopping by to visit (Heck, you're in Rome! Be a tourist! Why not!). I didn't take a tour of the inside, but I'm sure if you did, you wouldn't regret it.

Good to visit to get a view of the city. Beware of pick-pocketers (as always-- if someone tries to give you something "for free," they probably will chase after you and demand money). That said, nothing to go out of your way for, just some place to chill if you'd like!

The Arch of Constantine is located between Palatine Hill and the Colosseum. Built in 312 (talk about ancient!), the arch is prominent size and evokes a glimmer of ancient Rome.

The chains of St. Peter are indeed on display at the Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli, though, unlike modern magic acts, one can't actually touch them to see if they're real. (I suppose that's a matter of faith.) The church is beautiful, as are many churches in Rome, but the vincoli and a statue of Moses by Michelangelo are ...

The Basilica of San Clemente is one of Rome's more interesting and lesser known gems. It's an excavation all in itself. You enter at ground level and think, oh, whatever, baroque church, blah blah blah. But then, you get to descend to a very well preserved Medieval church on the level below. Two churches, built one on top of the ...

The Domus Aurea is an palace, built by emperor Nero. Altough it can only be visited with a guided tour, it's a must see in Rome. It's pretty impressing, how huge the area of the domus aurea was.

With one of the best night-time views of the Colosseum, Coming Out is a great gay bar but fun to hang out at for straight peeps as well. I had many a tipsy, fun night here when I lived in the Eternal City.

Probably my favorite part of the Foro Romano. The Temple of Antoninus and Faustina houses a great interior of murals and displays of old Roman things. I'm not sure if it's always open or not, but do try and make it inside. It's also a nice break from the sun.

Do not miss a visit to the Basilica of Our Lady in Trastevere. This Basilica is one of the oldest Churches of Rome. The basic floor plan and wall structure of the church dates back to the 340s. After the visit, do not look at your map and just get lost in the nice small cobblestone streets of Trastevere. You ...

Almost anywhere new I go I get the hop-on/hop-off bus so I can orient myself to the city before I go out exploring. The major sites in Rome are spread out, so this is a cheap way to see them. Remember though, that the bus only goes in one direction so you'll need to do some planning.

It's quite possible that this charming, homey-yet-classy bar in Trestevere has the best Belgian beer selection in Rome. Stop by before dinner for an aperetivo of peanuts, olives, and other snacks, or any time of day to play board games, lounge on luxe couches, or read one of the multi-language books in the shelves. This also is a great spot ...
