The Roswell Mill, located just a short drive north of Atlanta, is a deceptive name given to what’s actually several mills scattered along Vickery Creek, a waterway serving the massive Chattahoochee River. The old mills produced textiles until as late as 1975, but are most historically notable for their role in the U.S. Civil War, when the mills served as one of the most important manufacturing centers for the south.
The modern Roswell Mill serves a double purpose today. A portion of the area in downtown Roswell has been restored and modernized to serve as a cultural center and a parking area for the rest of the mill area, which remains mostly untouched and open for willing hikers to explore.
Since 2004, a beautiful covered bridge crossing Vickery Creek has allowed visitors to explore federally protected land as part of the Chattahoochee River Recreation Area, hiking to and exploring remnants of the old mills and dams. It’s a history rich adventure.Recommended for:
