I'm reading a book about Billy the Kid that I bought in Lincoln, New Mexico and it explains that Roswell was founded as a major cattle center along the Pecos, dominated by massive herds of rancher John Chisum. It's ironic, then, that today the town is most known for the alleged crash of a UFO in 1947. The International UFO Museum & Research Center is undoubtedly the main tourist draw. The Chihuahua desert and Bitter Lake Wildlife Refuge, however, are stark examples of nature at its most extreme.

A UFO allegedly crashed in Roswell in the summer of 1947, altering this town forever. Now Roswell is alien obsessed, and even the local McDonald’s is shaped like a flying saucer. UFO tourism has attracted folks to this small New Mexico town, where visitors frequent UFO-themed shops like the Alien Zone and turn up for the annual summer UFO Festival. (The cult TV show Roswell provided an added boost.) Skeptics and believers alike will find much to think about at the International UFO Museum and Research Center.

Kitschy and oddball are the two first adjectives that come to mind when I think of Roswell. Situated in some of the most desolate land in Eastern New Mexico, Roswell is famous for its association with aliens and the supposed alien aircraft that crashed nearby. Check out the museum, and just let yourself have a good time.

Most people are familiar with the UFO reputation of Roswell, but did you know that whole town has basically been converted into one giant alien-themed tourist trap? Alien shops, a UFO museum, alien food, alien bars and even an alien hotel. It's crazy, but also good fun. Roswell can definitely make the claim that there's nowhere else quite like this!

A little strange, a lot kitschy.

Must Grab a Big-Mac at the crash-landed UFO in McDonalds.

We arrived late so a lot of the shops were closed. Still, it was fun!

Description

Gaining worldwide notoriety for being home to the mysterious supposed alien spacecraft crash-landing back on the fourth of July, 1947, this once small ranching town owes it's tourist appeal to an event that is now beginning to become known under more down-to-earth explanations. A recently recovered sordid history recounts that instead of otherworldly origins, the crash landing at Roswell was an independence day bluff put on by the then USSR. Having no Nuclear weapons of their own at that point, the Soviets piloted an experimental craft into American airspace to inspire fear for their budding technological prowess into American minds. The tiny ship was manned by a group of child-sized pilots, and to avoid national hysteria, the government though it best to let claims that this was an Alien encounter distill fears with skeptical disbelief. Of course, don't let this single account sway your desire to visit this UFO capital of the world, since it could very well be another cover-up attempt to keep us from the truth. Nevertheless, this quirky town makes for a great vacation stop over, that skeptics and believers alike will find at the very least amusing.
