If you think all of Holland is just twee little houses and canals and clogs, Rotterdam will change your mind. Most of it was bombed to bits in WWII, so it's been rebuilt, often with wide avenues and skyscrapers. That in itself isn't much to recommend it, but for sheer contrast with the rest of the Netherlands, it's very interesting. The cultural diversity in Rotterdam is also huge, and the art scene is a bit edgier than Amsterdam. Oh, yeah, AND the largest shipping port in the world, I think? You can take a boat tour through it--it's pretty amazing...

Best Vacation Rental I've been to!
Excellent location! Right in the center of town, shop & market at zero walkind distance. Public transport at 2 minutes walk. Sleeps 4-7 people, TV, WIFI, Washer & Dryer, Complete kitchen, linen & towels etc etc.
Also parking available in garage.

I was born and raised in Rotterdam, so maybe I'm a bit prejudiced. There's a lot missing in Rotterdam that you can find in other cities (e.g. a city centre full of old buildings, or vegan restaurants), but what makes it great is that the city is constantly moving and that each neighbourhood is so very different from the others.

Where Amsterdam is the Arts and Entertainment capital of the Netherlands, Rotterdam is the Commercial and Business nerve center of this tiny flat country. Rotterdam is the busiest seaport in western Europe and is the main life line for containers of cargo to enter the European continent.
Consequently, there is a bit of a rivalry between Rotterdam and Amsterdam, not unlike New York and Los Angeles, Milan and Rome, or Tokyo and Osaka.
The good news is that there are international recognizable accommodations and dining, at least for the business traveller. The area has international flavor, too, as many foreign corporations have set up warehousing and distribution activities in or near Rotterdam.
