Rottnest Island is a small island off the coast of Western Australia, not far off from Perth, one of the most isolated major cities in the world.

Rottnest was named by the Dutch, who upon seeing the little marsupials that live only here, the Quokkas, mistaken them for rats (rotts in Dutch).

The island is a great day trip to ferry over, rent bicycles, and then bike around the island for a unique and beautiful ride, taking in all the natural beauty and if you are lucky, seeing a Quokka.

There are facilities at the ferry point to eat and relax after a great day on the island.

Loved Rottnest Island! Definitely the highlight of my trip to Perth. I would recommend hiring a bike and going snorkeling.

This gem of an Island is amazing. After taking the ferry across from the mainland you arrive at a cross between a quaint east coach beach town combined with the rugged outdoors of the California central coast. Great swimming, diving and all water activities as well as fun biking around the Island. Worth the trip out if you are in Perth for 4+ days.

A short boat ride to this island sees you snorkeling in sheltered bays, fishing, munching on a pastry from the bakery, or sharing a jug of beer with friends whilst listening to the band play. No cars on the island except emergency services, and utility vehicles, with the exception of a bus that does pick up and drop offs round the island. Hire a bike and find your own private spot.

Description

If a kangaroo were to be hit by a blast from a shrink-ray, it would look a lot like a quokka, an adorable and outgoing species of marsupial found only in a few pockets of Western Australia. One of their few homes is tiny Rottnest Island, just a 25-minute ferry ride from the mainland of Western Australia, where these little fellas will readily approach you. They aren’t the only attraction at this ... read more
popular holiday destination, though. Hiking, golfing, biking, diving, snorkeling, and swimming all draw visitors here from nearby Perth and beyond. While the majority of visitors only stay for the day, there are self-contained units, a hotel, dormitories, and camping available on the island. There are several restaurants, coffee shops and a general store to keep you well fed during your stay.
