An ode to funky yesteryear, Royal Grove is a budget must for fans of the quirky. First of all, this vintage low-rise is hot pink. It's also built around a pool in classic 50's style, and the pool is for sure the central hangout zone. Since the hotel has a large number of annual repeat visitors, everyone seems to know each other, which has a charming, almost sitcom feel. Decor includes all sorts of chotskies, stacks of paperback books and vintage lobby furnishings, plus a mascot cockatiel who's rarely in his cage. Rooms are definitely not the highlight--they're old, tired and pretty plain, with very mediocre views from balconies. Some face the pool, which I think might be better than the street view, assuming you don't mind the sounds of splashing and laughing. But they're reasonably large and equipped with kitchenettes and tables, so you can really make home here for awhile. They're also non-smoking and clean enough. The prices at Royal Grove are really reasonable--plus the hotel's only about a block from Waikiki Beach. Just around the corner on Kuhio, be sure to pick up lunch at Ruffage--a little known natural foods cafe that's delicious and affordable.

From the outside, this salmon colored hotel looks a little rundown but the inside has a very charming and vintage feel. Walking into the lobby, I felt like I was transported back into time! The atmosphere is comforting and laid back. There’s a reading area with books and board games in the lobby to mingle and socialize with guests. I really like how the pool area is right in the middle of the hotel where guests can hang out and chill. Also, the beach is only one block away as well as other main Waikiki attractions like the Zoo, International Market Place and Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. The rooms are a bit dated but are spacious and tidy. All the rooms come with a kitchenette and come with either 2 or 3 beds. This budget friendly hotel is perfect for people who are looking for a place to stay that near all the restaurants and entertainment in Waikiki.

The room rates here are dirt cheap, but you get what you pay for. I'd only recommend this hotel to travelers on the tightest of tight budgets. The hotel lobby and pool areas are run-down. The card tables in the lobby are cluttered. When I visited, the caged bird near the 24-hour service desk was chattering. It just doesn't have the relaxing vacation vibe you're looking for out of your Hawaii vacation. The rooms are very outdated and oddly organized, with some of the beds pushed right up against the entryway door. On the plus side, the hotel is in a great location -- just a couple hundred yards from Waikiki Beach. But if you can afford to stay elsewhere, you probably should.
