If you are ever in Northland, New Zealand in the Paihia/Russell area, be sure to book yourself on a day sail aboard the R Tucker Thompson. When a friend talked me into doing this, it was the one activity I was only lukewarm about. Much to my surprise, sailing on the R Tucker Thompson was one of my favorite adventures on the North Island. The crew brilliantly gets guests to meet each other and interact by giving us duties whether we are helping to hoist or lower sails. I was the only American onboard when I sailed in Feb. 2009. I met travelers from Holland, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Germany. I disembarked feeling like I'd spent a glorious day sailing with the United Nations. And the money spent on activities goes to the Sail Training Trust which helps educate underprivileged youngsters in the art of sailing.
