Their core principles: “the protection of healthy sites” and the “healing of damaged sites.” Saffire Freycinet is at the highest end of the luxury spectrum, but their main focus is harmonizing with the breathtaking nature surrounding the hotel. From the organic, nature-inspired architecture to their commendable sustainability efforts, Saffire Freycinet stands out by blending in.Recommended for:Green Travelers

Another property riding the global trend for high-end luxury amid the wilderness. From the moment you step off your flight at Tasmania's Hobart airport, the pampering begins. Staff from the hotel meet you as you arrive and escort you to a special lounge area where there's an opportunity to have something to drink and take a shower before the onward drive to the property; they also send someone to wait at the carousel to pick up your checked baggage. It's a long drive to get to the place - just over 2.5 hours - but the reward is that there's nothing but nature's beauty as far as the eye can see. Silence and seclusion are now premium commodities it seems. The architecture of the hotel is striking: its organic lines - the centrepiece of which looks like a giant stingray - give it the appearance from afar of a futuristic air terminal. But once up close you're overwhelmed by the subtlty of the place and everything once again seems more intimate. The suites are exceptionally furnished: the best of classic contemporary Australian design, all crisp and clean, with amazing picture windows giving unbroken views over the national park landscape. We took a premium suite, with its own outdoor deck and seating area and its own outdoor plunge pool, though neither of us were brave enough to try it out. The real treat was booking one of the chefs to come and prepare dinner for us in the suite on our first night. The management here have clearly thought carefully about the needs of a discerning traveller and everything has seemingly been thought of, albeit at a cost. If there's one criticism I'd have it's that the place is so inviting and comfortable, you don't feel that inclined to get out into the surrounding countryside - the design and setting mean that you feel part of it, without directly engaging with it - not unlike watching a natural history TV programme.
