- Sam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch & Crab - CLOSEDCommunity ManagerMember ofLocal CultureFoodiesBackpackers+ 4Jul 16, 2013
Sam Choy's positions itself almost awkwardly between fancier dining and casual cuisine. Where Roy's and Alan Wong lure a more refined crowd, Sam Choy's can appeal to all types, and that is both a good and a bad for the restaurant.
Would you pay $14 for plate lunch if it's the best plate lunch you can buy?
In terms of quality local comfort food, I would say Sam Choy's is pretty much up there. It is what made him a local celebrity, earning him guest appearences on Emeril’s Food Network show (he made spam katsu, if you can believe it). The food tasted great, and the service couldn't be any more friendly or smiley. But the Fried Ahi Poke I had was more cooked than I would have preferred and the prices were at the high end of casual dining. That said, I still had a really great time and I wouldn't hesitate to come back for another go.Recommended for

Breakfast lunch and crab. I love it. I do. Sam Choy is a big fat happy chef and a man after my own heart. Great beer (he brews his own here), great meat (his ribeye is da kine!), and great poke and you can't go wrong. Not to mention his over-use of all things pig (kalua pork, bacon, pork belly). Ya, it feels a bit like Zippys or maybe a Hawaiian Dennys and it couldnt be in a worse location IMHO but if you love local cooking and dont want to pay Alan Wong prices (or pretense) then put on your elastic pants and head to Sam's! Try to catch his TV show if you are stuck in the hotel one day. He's really entertaining.
