If you are a hiker or just have great stamina and want to experience some beautiful Greek scenery than you will love this.
You have to take a bus to get to the mountain and the hike realistically takes about 5 hours but you start in the mountains and end at the the sea in Sfakia.
From there you have to take another ferry to the mainland and then local transportation back to where ever you are staying.
The views are spectacular and it is tranquil.
A great place to meditate and if you have the time spend a couple of days in Sfakia it is beautiful and one of the few places in Greece that is still not commercialized.

Amazing scenery, but be warned this is not a stroll in the country. You need good hiking boots,3-4litres of water and you must like some rough terrain, but its worth it. give yourself a minimum of 5hours for this and at the end enjoy a nice fresh fish, steak chicken dinner to round off your day,A day to remember.

I have done the hike years ago, in spring, when the sun was not burning too hot. We hiked it(with full backpacks) from the sea to the top, which is the opposite of what most people do. But i enjoyed it more. It was not really challenging or difficult, just a good hike. The scenery is great, the views very nice, and in sprint everything is still green and/or blooming.
