You really can't beat this hostel - or its location - if you've come to Vancouver to have a good time! Samesun is located in a sprawling building in the middle of Granville Street surrounded by nightclubs, great food, and cool shops. It looks a little seedy from the outside with its neon sign, but inside it’s perfectly clean, comfortable, and secure since you need a keycard to get into the guest area.
There’s a few choices when you’re booking a dorm bed. There’s men-only, women-only, and mixed dorms and they vary with 4, 6 or 8 beds. There really isn’t much difference in price through. All of the rooms have bunk beds, lockers to store your valuables, and a window you can open to keep the room smelling fresh. There are private rooms too with or without an attached bathroom, but they go fast so you’ll want to book in advance.

Where Samesun really shines is all the extras. First up, there’s a good breakfast spread every morning with bagels, muffin, toast, fruit, and coffee. The WiFi is free and there’s a kitchen, lounge room with pool table, and a TV room where you can close the door and watch Netflix without disturbing anyone else. There’s also The Beaver Lounge on the ground level with cheap beer and events like trivia nights. Since the hostel is 18+ it does have a party atmosphere, so if you’re looking for a place to go to bed early you might want to stay elsewhere. But if you want to meet other travelers to explore Vancouver with, this is your place.

Surrounded by Granville Street’s bars, clubs and 99 cent pizza joints, SameSun is an ideal spot for backpackers in search of budget-friendly nightlife. It’s the city’s largest hostel, naturally making it a hub of activity—light sleepers, pack your earplugs.

Security standards are high with 25 cameras and a rotating entry code. Although the 103-year-old building’s multiple levels and long corridors can feel a little impersonal (think college dorm), well-used common areas and cheerful staff make it a comfortable place to hang out on a rainy day.

Check out the attached pub, The Beaver, where you can join the locals as they cheer for the Canucks over budget-friendly drinks and $4.95 daily dinner specials (Sunday’s roast is a favourite). Better yet, check out the game live. The front desk sells discounted tickets, and will even let you purchase them before your arrival.

Located three blocks from Vancouver City Centre train station in the middle of the entertainment district on Vancouver’s Granville Street, Samesun’s lobby could be mistaken for the entry to a casual pub that does a side business in Vancouver excursions. Entering the hostel lobby in the winter you will see daily snow reports for all of the nearby ski-hills and extremely casual yet friendly staff that wear Samesun-branded t-shirts. Past the desk is the Beaver Lounge area which is open to the public nightly and has daily food specials.

The 103-year-old building that Samesun calls home does not have elevators and so it’s a trek up steep stairs to reach the kitchen, common area, and hostel bedrooms but the walls are adorned with colourful murals which at least make it an interesting hike. Each door also has a unique mural - most of flags of countries - which is certainly easier to remember than a room number. Inside the rooms which contain four to six beds, the floorboards are worn which impresses the age of the building.

Maybe it was particularly busy during my visit but no matter where I was in the building, there seemed to be people. Running between showers in the bright hallways, tweeting in the common room (which has a pool table and an adjacent movie room), preparing food in the large, bright common kitchen, or lounging in the lobby waiting for the next tour, the place just seemed busy: a vibrant choice for backpackers.
