To be quite honest, North Beach can be a pretty shitty place sometimes. On the weekends you get a lot of people who just wanna spend tons of money, look flashy, pick fights and in general, be assholes. That's their thing, whatever. But according some of my older friends (as well as books and movies) North Beach actually use to be a really cool place where neat and artistic things took place (like when my friend had Charles Bukowski come and read at her house in the late 70's). Like Vesuvio and Spec's, Sam's is a glimpse into what North Beach must have been like before...well, before now. Don't get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing neat or artistic about Sam's, it's just a greasy spoon diner for fuck's sake, but it's a real diner for real people who don't want to spend $10 on a beer just to be around other people willing to spend $10 on a beer. Sam's is only open from 5pm-2am, but I bet you'll meet more interesting people in one drunk food excursion here than you will in 2 months of partying at douchey clubs.Recommended for:Budget Travelers

I don't buy it. Not one bit. I know Anthony Bourdain was here, but I wasn't satisfied with the late night burger munchies after a few rounds of drinks.
The guy behind the counter was really nice and grilled the burgers quick like a machine! Small diner and very little room to breathe, I'm flabbergasted with the price! Close to $10 for a measly amount of fries and a burger?
Okay, I gave it a shot and got the Anthony Bourdain's special. Was I impressed? No. I think a couple of reviewers must've been drunk out of their minds, because I didn't find my burger tasteful. I don't know, maybe I came here on an off day? The meat seemed under-seasoned with very little amount of meat and the fries were sitting stale. I couldn't fathom chewing on their pizza that looked like it was sitting there for days! Personally, I like that it's open late, not too far of a walk if you're drinking around Chinatown and North Beach, and the guy working the grill is really nice.
Mr. Bourdain was right about one thing, SF is dubbed "the two-fisted drinking town, a carnivorous meat-eating town, it's dirty and nasty and wonderful." Heck, he said this while he was in his drunken state filming The Layover.
Will I come back? No.

Walking by last night, I saw a line out the door and the interior full of smoke. Sam's was cookin' up some serious amounts of burgers for the mostly inebriated bar crowd. That is the typical clientele here, though you'll often find SF's finest here as well, as the cops like to stop in for burgers to go.
Sam's shines with their simple cheeseburgers; unpretentious and tasty. Skip the sad looking pizza slices or the chicken nuggets from the Costco bags. And do try to avoid the place when the bars close.
