The cathedral is beautiful, but I don't recommend going to the catacombs. It's a combination of stinky and spooky. You can practically breath in the mold. : (

This historic church is a usual on the tourist beat. Highlights of the tour (and the site can only be accessed by tour -- available in English) include the painting of Jesus eating guinea pig at the last supper, the fascinating library, and the creepy catacombs. Given how cheap a visit is, and the proximity to Plaza de Armas, I really can't imagine why you wouldn't want to stop by.

The catacombs are part of the San Francisco museum. They are obviously not as large as the ones in Paris, but they once served to bury rich people who paid large amounts of money to be buried in the church, thinking that this would make it easier for them to go straight to heaven.

This was my favorite stop in Lima. The catacombs are chillingly beautiful and the collection of artwork is really impressive.

The San Francisco Cathedral is the most visited church in all of Lima. It was constructed in 1674, and served as the city's first cemetery. If you visit the catacombs you will see the remains of thousands of those who have crossed over. I loved this Church, but the catacombs was a bit macabre.

Entrance to the catacombs is through the San Francisco Church. They offer both English and Spanish docent guided tours and the price of the tour is minimal considering the wonderful arts, exhibits, and history that are presented on this tour that is part art appreciation, part adventure to the subterranean world.

This place is a must-see for the catacombs and also for the art. You have to go on a tour, which was annoying since our "English-speaking" tour guide clearly spoke English as his second language and with a crazy Italian accent. Yes, really.

Description

It’s not just for those with a passion for religious history or Spanish Baroque architecture. Those with a morbid curiosity will find it sated here. The catacombs are thought to contain the remains of over 70,000 souls, some of which have been artfully arranged along the walls of deep holes in the bowels of the cathedral. Tours of the church and convent, whose library is renowned for its impressive collection of antique texts, will take you through a portion of the catacombs; past beautiful Christian art; and inside the stunningly designed World Heritage site.
