I probably don't give San Jose enough credit for what it is, but the vibe of the city doesn't jive with me as much as it could've before I became a city kid. Urban sprawl are two words I just don't like placed adjacent to one another.
On the upside, there are many fun places to visit in San Jose, the theater and arts scene is vibrant, and the city offers one thing San Francisco will never, ever have: parking.

I felt like Dorothy stepping into Oz, the screen bursting into colour for the first time. San Jose is big and bright. Every building, flower, and tree towered over my head and invited me for a stroll, like a cluster of friendly giants. There was even a game of jumbo chess taking place in the square. There are some very high-end shops throughout, but it does not feel too exclusive if you are just there for a casual lunch. With so many great restaurants to choose from, it would be hard to have a bad day here. The flourishing gardens fight for attention with the huge shimmering buildings, and it is a beautiful battle to see.

Rating cities is all about personal experience. I'm not a native of California, but for me it's all about the feeling of family and home I get when here. I visit San Jose nearly every year and I enjoy it every time (but it's also mainly about enjoying it with the people you're with, and for me that means family). It's very casual, with lots of beautiful sunny days and places to explore. It's a great intertwining of urban and suburban, so come here with family and friends for a great experience.

It's not San Francisco and if we remember that than it's got potential to be appreciated. It's actually the first city in California, started back in 1777 and it's got its share of tragic, comic and interesting stories. Consider taking a San Jose Walks & Talks walking tour to get the inside scoop from some enterprising students. www.sanjosewalksandtalks.org

San Jose isn't the best thing going in the area, and it's a city I deal with merely to use it's sane airport. Otherwise, I leave as soon as possible for the better things happening outside of San Jose.

San Jose has a little bit of everything. Plenty of strange...I mean interesting people. There is the SJSU university for the students. The HP Pavillion for concerts and of course hockey (Go Sharks). A lot of bar/clubs/restaurants scattered around. A nice array of events such as the Music in the Park. It though might be a city still in search of an identity. Ask somebody who has never been to San Jose.."What do you know about San Jose" and you probably will get a lot of silence.
