Stranded exactly midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles (if you're going the slow coastal route via Hwys 101 and 1), San Luis Obispo is the easiest place to break your journey. Park your car downtown, get out and wander the friendly streets of this college town. Grab a microbrew or a locavarian lunch, join the political activists and organic farmers at the Thursday night farmers market, and climb up Bishop Peak for fabulous sunsets.

With mild year-round weather, fewer crowds, and affordable prices (at least compared to L.A. and San Francisco), this central-coast college town embodies California mellow, making for easy romance. It also offers easy access to great wine country (think Sideways), laid-back Pismo Beach, and the grandeur of Hearst Castle. Readers ranked it at the top of the survey for its coffee—like the fair-trade, organic brews served at local favorite Blackhorse Espresso and Bakery.

I absolutely love this town. I've only ever driven through, but it's always a must-stop for me. Many tree lined streets filled with amazing shops and great food.

When my friend told me that he had moved back to the place where he went to college and was spending his days surfing and wine tasting, I couldn't imagine that such a paradise existed. But it does: in San Luis Obispo. SLO is a college town, so walking around in the downtown area means that you frequently overhear conversations that involve the latest kegger; however, with a myriad of coffee and ice cream shops to choose from, you can hardly dwell on this fact.
I spent much of my vacation vineyard hopping, each more beautiful than the next. There seems to be no end to the beautiful outlooks that you can gaze upon with a fantastic glass of wine in your hand.

San Luis Obispo is a great stop over on a road trip. It's the town name on all the signs for a while, so check it out so you know what you are driving toward. It's also a good base for exploring the nearby towns.

My second home. A beautiful, charming, and perfectly laid back town on the central coast just 10 minutes from the beaches of Avila and Pismo. Rolling green hills, awesome restaurants (think bbq!), artistic community, close proximity to Edna Valley and Paso Robles wineries, Cal Poly SLO, Thursday Farmers Markets, welcoming locals and unique eclectic shops are just a few things that come to mind when I think of San Luis. Oh, and home to the first ever Jamba Juice. This college town is not overrun by twenty somethings, but rather the students are the backbone of an intellectually stimulated community. An unspoilt California town preserving its heritage and character, a must-visit!

This little town doesn't have a whole lot but it's a great place to raise your kids. There is a big university there and a popular farmer's market. Other than that, I'll probably come back here to retire or something. We were visiting my ex-boyfriend's friends and that was the only reason why we came here.
