Can't say enough good things about my experience in Atacama. I would return in a heart beat. I stayed at Alto Atacama and the service was truly impeccable. Most of my excursions ended up being private, and while I was there, people who had booked shorter durations kept extending their stays. In general, people under estimate the amount of time needed to visit. You need time to acclimate, to get to the higher altitude. Enjoy horse back riding, cycling, trekking, star gazing and much more. My favorite properties in order of preference 1. Alto Atacama 2. Awasi --mainly because tours are guaranteed private. 3. Tierra Atacama 4.Explora, not so much the property, but the excursions and opportunity to do a "Travesia" to Bolivia is well worth the experience. Atacama is an excellent gateway to Bolivia, and in particular Uyuni. There is so much to be said about the experience...I combined Galapagos, Atacama and Bolivia on this trip and the diversity of what I saw was truly a phenomenal experience, one I highly recommend.

San Pedro de Atacama is a great jumping off point for exploring the deserts around. It is a small, sleepy desert town with a thriving Chilean hippy scene. A nice place to kick around for a few days.
