San Remo Hotel is a beautiful hotel at a great location. North Beach is one of my favorite neighborhoods in San Francisco, full of culture, food and a fun European vibe. San Remo sits in a quiet part of North Beach away from the noise. It's also really close to Fisherman's Wharf, so getting to some clam chowder isn't hard.
The staff are really friendly and the rooms are nice. Two things to note: restrooms are separate from the rooms (though some rooms have their own sinks) and there is a stairway to enter the hotel (important for those who don't scale stairs too well).
The attached restaurant, Fior d'Italia, is the oldest Italian restaurant in America. I haven't tried it, though I'd like to. There is a fun scale outside the restaurant so you can weigh yourself before and after your meal. I'm not exactly sure why you'd want to do that though...

San Remo Hotel is a quaint and charming European style hotel that's in the heart of North Beach/Fisherman's Wharf. Rooms are cozy and the decor takes you back to a different era, which makes perfect sense because the building was built in 1906, after the San Francisco earthquake that took down/burnt down most of the city. You can feel and see the history when you walk down the hallways. Bathrooms are shared. Rooms don't have televisions or phones, but they do have free Wi-Fi available, so they're not all about taking you back in time. A payphone is available for use in the lobby. The famous Fior d'Italia, known to be America's oldest Italian restaurant, is also on the ground floor. Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, and North Beach restaurants are all within walking distance. But if you want to get away from all of the tourist attractions, Hotel Remo is the quiet getaway that's still in the middle of it all.Recommended for:History Buffs
