The castle is pretty and has great views. The 4 euro charge to get in and walk around was worth it if you like that kind of thing but there’s nothing spectacular to see . A wonderful place to go if one is in Madrid and has some time left. One can visit the castle Alcázar, as well as the magnificent cathedral and the world famous Roman Aqueduct.

San Lorenzo de El Escorial was built by King Phillip II in the late 16th century. Essentially, Phillip ran his many wars, and his Roman Catholic Counter-Reformation against Protestantism from this monastery. He eventually died here in 1598.

This is a great little day trip from Madrid. Set an hour from Madrid, you can go on all sorts of great hikes. Very easy to get to - just take a bus from Principe Pio metro station or the Renfe/Cercanias train from Charmartin metro. Get your hike on!
