Sanibel has an island charm all its own, and a short drive from our home....some charming and fun restaurants, fun shopping, the Ding Darling Nature Preserve (bike, bus, or drive thru), and lovely homes and beaches. Attached at the end...Captiva Island, really my favorite over Sanibel...a bit more secluded, with some fun restaurants on the beach at it's very end tip. Explore both for an afternoon, sit back, and relax.

The worlds best shell collecting beaches in the world!! Only a short 20 minute drvie from the Heron House. Beautiful white-sand Gulf beaches. Lots of upscale restaurants.

If you have never been, it is a must see. If you have been, then you know that it is a must return to see. Immerse yourself in the island style of passing time. From the shoppes to the beach, restaurants to the historic lighthouse there is something for everyone. Slow paced and relaxing is my memories of this wonderful place.

Five stars. Great place for the family to spend a day. Great shelling. Drive or bike Ding Darling wildlife preserve. Two many restaurants to even mention. Boat tour the nearby islands. Hire a boat captain and try the great fishing in the area.

The 'balloon' for this place is wrong. I'm writing about Sanibel Island.
Great beaches for shelling (2nd or 3rd best in the world) although its rare to find a great shell. I'm told the best time is during a full moon or new moon or after a storm. The expert shells are there at 5am. But it's fun to walk the beaches. There are biking lanes all over the island and places to rent them. The restaurants are great. Parking is $2.00 an hour and it costs $5 or $6 per car to cross the bridge.

Sanibel Island has a selection of very nice beaches. Bowman Beach is one of the best with more parking. Parking is $2 per hour. You can also visit the Causeway Beaches as you drive over the bridge and there is no parking fee. Sanibel beaches are famous for great seashells - get there early in the morning for the best selection. There are many great restaurants including Pinnochio's Ice Cream near the lighthouse, Jacaranda which has fine dining, Doc Fords Bar & Grill, and The Island Cow which is great for families. All have outdoor seating and great food. Make sure to visit Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge and Bailey's Tract with hiking/biking trails where you might see an alligator in the wild. There are many quaint little shops for your shopping pleasure. You can also rent bicycles and ride one of the many bike trails.

Very beautiful and relaxing place. Sanibel is famous for its shelling - there is tons of marine life off shore, leading to beaches that are literally covered with sea shells of all shapes and sizes. Really fun to wander for hours, collecting.
There are a few really good sea food places here as well.

My wife's grandparents owned a place on Sanibel and over the years I got to know Sanibel and Captiva Islands. Of the two, Sanibel is the more well preserved. There are many secluded beaches and you can go kayaking in Tarpon Bay. Both Sanibel and Captiva enjoy a number of fantastic low key and fine dining restaurants. Tops on my list are the Mucky Duck, the Jacaranda and the Key Lime Bistro.
