The Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs, is a lovely church in regular use by the locals, located on the Piazza della Republica, just a short distance from Termini station. We spent over an hour here just listening to the choir practice.

Parts of the ruined Baths of Diocletian provided the building material and setting for this church, constructed by Michelangelo in 1563. An exhibition in the sacristy gives a detailed account of Michelangelo's original design.

Description:

The Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli e die Martiri alle Terme di Diocleziano means “The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and Martyrs at the Diocletian Baths.” Michelangelo’s last great architectural construction, he worked on part of this Roman church from 1563 to 1564. He died soon after finishing it, while Luigi Vantivelli made additional construction in 1749 while respecting the integrity of Michelangelo’s work. The elaborately designed church features statues of St. Bruno of Cologne, John the Baptist and Galileo Galilei. It is open seven days a week and offers mass services as well.
