Santa Maria della Vittoria

Via 20 Settembre, 17, Rome, Province of Rome, Italy
18 reviews

Rome is filled with precious pieces of art history that a traveler in a hurry could overlook, and this church is one. Secreted inside is Bernini's masterwork Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, a prime example of sensual Baroque sculpture.

Step through the unassuming entrance to this amazing church located in a building that used to house Roman baths. You will be greeted by a grand dome topped with an incredible stained glass image of the solar system. Inside, you can admire the old meridian which, until the mid 1800s, was used to set the clocks in Rome.

Is and always will be one of my favorite places in Rome. To step into the Pantheon on a hot day with little crowds is like stepping into another world. They way the sun shines down on the floor and the peacefulness of the place is just overwhelming. Knowing this incredible building was built at a time when technology and ...

I would pass by this church every day on my way to school, and it always took my breath away. The facade is not as extravagant as some other churches in Rome, but just knowing that it is one of the oldest of its kind is impressive enough. The square is great to sit in and people watch, since it's ...

Located just behing the Pantheon, the tiny and discrete Piazza della Minerva deserves our attention. The marble elephant sculpture with an egyptian obelisk on its back, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1667 is one of the most bizarre monument of Rome, though forgotten by tourists. The elephant is a strict copy of a famous illustration from the extraordinary novel ...

The Pincio offers some excellent vantage points of the Piazza del Popolo. The only annoying thing: during the holidays, the view is blocked -- usually -- but an extremely large Christmas tree that tends to stay up a bit longer than one might expect. In the late spring and early summer, you can get some amazing photos of Rome's skyline ...

An amazing church. The ceiling art and decorations are well worth making the time to visit. The images spill out from the boarders of the painting and then into 3d figures falling from the ceiling.

I love the ceiling here! Sadly, I almost skipped this church while I was enroute to find the Chiesa di Santa Maria sopra Minerva. I'm glad I came across it (it's right next door). Modest, compared to its neighbors, it's still incredibly stunning and worth a visit. The piazza out front is also molto accogliente.

Great place to watch the sunset in Rome. The drawback is that it can get a bit crowded with all the tourists and people hawking their wares.
