One of those treasures that's all too common in Rome, Santa Maria della Vittoria houses the incredible Bernini sculpture "The Ecstasy of St. Theresa" so circumspectly that you'd never know it was there. The church is beautiful, but the sculpture itself, like so many of Bernini's works, is truly masterful.

Rome is filled with precious pieces of art history that a traveler in a hurry could overlook, and this church is one. Secreted inside is Bernini's masterwork Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, a prime example of sensual Baroque sculpture.

This church houses the outrageously theatrical sculpture called the Ecstacy of Saint Theresa in the Cornaro Chapel by Gianlorenzo Bernini, a genius artist. The statue is like a stage which depicts a moment described by Saint Teresa of Avila in her autobiography, where she had the vivid vision of an angel piercing her heart with a golden shaft, causing her both immense joy and pain. Meanwhile members of the Cornaro family look on from the sides.

I love me some Bernini. I also love Roman churches. Santa Maria della Vittoria offers the sculpture master's "The Ecstasy of St. Theresa." Looking upon it will have you sharing a similar sensation.

this stunning Baroque church housse the truly astonishing Cornaro Chapel with its dramatic sculpture, "Ecstasy of St. Teresa", the late Baroque work by Bernini.
