This church is always full of tourists who want to get their picture with the "Mouth of Truth" -- so for those of us who want to identify with Audrey Hepburn and have our own "Roman Holiday," then this is an interesting church that blends not only the spirituality of Catholicism but also has strong links to Rome's ancient religions. Expect to wait for quite some time to enter the church. The interior is interesting to see, and the main church has a relaxing and meditative quality that is much needed after braving the crowds and chaos of the Eternal City!

Children seem to love this place, especially if you tell them the urban legend about what happens when you stick your hand inside the mouth and tell a lie! It's fun to watch the kids get nervous as they wait for their picture to be taken! The wait for this spectacle can be quite long so I advise getting there in the morning before the afternoon heat arrives.

I was a little underwhelmed by this attraction. You line up for 20 minutes, stick your hand in the mouth and take a picture. There are a lot of other, more historically satisfying monuments in Rome to check out. If you happen to be walking by and there isn't a massive wait, then it might be worth it.

If you've seen Roman Holiday, then of course, you need to visit the Mouth of Truth (Bocca della Verita) and take a photo of yourself with your hand in its mouth. It's just one of those things.

This church is famous for the Mouth of Truth (La Bocca della Verita), which was featured in the Audrey Hepburn-Gregory Peck film called Roman Holiday. There might be a queue to literally put your hand in the mouth, which takes away some of the fun. Still, if there's not a long line, I would suggest going it. Some might decry this as being touristy but as a fan of the film, I think it's neat.

Famous for being the location of La Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth), which featured in the 1953 film Roman Holiday. You simply have to join the queues to have your photo taken with your hand in The Mouth. Its bell tower is the tallest medieval belfry in Rome.

Add this to my short list of over-hyped things in Rome. The church itself is wholly modest compared to pretty much all other churches you'll be seeing in Rome. There's a neat crypt underneath that adds a bit of spooky history, and it requires one euro for admission. It was quite interesting to see such a modest church, though it also meant I didn't spend a lot of time here.

As for the Bocca della Verità, I basically took photos of people in line waiting to take photos next to it. I don't think it's worth waiting for that at all. But, hey, to each their own.

The mouth of the Truth: the atrium of the thirteenth-century church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin: with its beautiful floors.
On may want to see the Church of San Giorgio Al Velabro, equally beautiful and very close.

The ancient church is magnificent, but don't bother waiting in a long line just to stick your hand into the legendary mouth.

The Bocca della Verità is the ediface with a mouth where you stick in your hand but only get it back if you're telling the truth. It was a big deal in Roman Holiday.

They've got the system down here. You queue up and when it's your turn you hand your camera to the guide. He takes the picture and you move on. Perfect.

    The church is nice too.

The Church itself is very small and not spectacular. The Bocca della Verita is outside and you pay 50cents to take a photo with it. Other than this, nothing to do there.

OK, so maybe the actual Mouth of Truth was anticlimactic in real life, but in the front patio of this church is where it is. And if you've ever seen Roman Holiday, you know you want to come see this.

Description

One supposes that if the famed Bocca della Verità actually took off the hands of liars like its legend suggests, there would be plenty of hands left behind here. The “Mouth of Truth” is perhaps the most famous attraction of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, a basilica in Rome. The large stone blank face, most likely that of the pagan god Oceanus, was made famous in the film Roman Holiday, where Audrey Hepburn placed her hand inside to test her fidelity. Mind games aside, this 8th-century church offers plenty in terms of architecture, art and history.
