The pier has gone through several incarnations. The current pier retains a vestige of its history with the still functioning 1916 Loof Carousel and its fifty-six, hand carved, wooden horses. This was the "Chicago Carousel" seen in the movie The Sting. The pier and the carousel have also been the location for numerous other movies including Inside Daisy Clover and They Shoot Horses, Don't They?Recommended for:History Buffs

You HAVE to visit Santa Monica Pier if it's your first time in Santa Monica. The pier has a lot going on from an aquarium to rides and games, "street" performances, a restaurant, souveniers, etc. Just like any LA beach, you have to pay for parking. (This is so crazy to me as it's not like that in Hawaii).
There's also a biker's/runner's path, the pier is great for photo shoots, and the beach is huge and great to just lie around and hang out if you want.

+ Lots of stuff in the Pier.
+ Street performer is common here.
+ Good view and there is pretty of seats nearby.
- Too crowded even in the weekday.
- Expensive to park and eat around the area.
- A bit dirty due to high volume of crowd.
This is probably the most popular beach in L.A., but reality is mostly tourism come here the most, local usually goes to smaller beach like Malibu and Manhattan or down to O.C. Is a big beach and the pier has just about anything that can fit in there.
Is more idea for kids and for visitor then for locals?

It's hard to beat a full amusement park with a seaside setting, which is exactly what you'll find at this L.A. landmark. Get an all-day pass if you plan on staying for long, as individual tickets can get expensive pretty quickly.

Tons of dining options, entertainment, rides, and novelty - this place is a carnival and a stip mall all in one. There's no shortage of things to do, and the only drawback is the crowds - worst in summer and on weekends. It's a great outing for the whole family, despite the parking fee.

Santa Monica Pier is a gorgeous lookout point. We rode bikes there from Venice Beach and hauled them up onto the pier to stroll around. It was a bit cumbersome, but we had fun. I loved the area, but it's PACKED crowded.Recommended for:Local Culture

Great place to go with the kids! Weekends are really crowded, but that is when all the good stuff is open, walk all the way to the end of the pier for a really nice view and good seagull photo ops.
