The great thing about SoCal? Beaches everywhere! Santa Monica is known to be the family-oriented and shopper-centric beach. There's Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica place just a block from the beach. You could spend the whole day in Santa Monica shopping, eating, soaking up the sun, and swimming. If you park around the Third Street Promenade area, the first 90 minutes are free. Parking close to the beach can be difficult and a bit pricier. Come early if you want to park one of those lots.Recommended for:

Like many locals, I never get tired of watching the sun set over the pastel blue color of the Pacific. Venice or Santa Monica Beach is the perfect location for this ultimate, eternal grand show of nature.Recommended for:

This beach is great for anyone looking for sun & fun. You can ride bikes, show off your strength @ the original muscle beach, or just relax & soak some rays. It's popular but not crowded.Recommended for:

One of LA's best beaches! The sand is soft and the beach is broad. You can surf in a couple of spots - south of the pier is best (come early before its blown out). There are playgrounds here for kids, and while you are not super far from the town of santa monica, its far enough that you should pack a picnic. Parking can be brutal, especially on the weekends in summer, so the earlier you arrive the better!Recommended for:

Gorgeous beach is one of West LA's stunners, even if the water isn't always the cleanest and the crowds of families and tourists can get overwhelming on summer weekends in July and August. Head to the pier for carnival fun and outdoor music concerts in summer, and look for the end of Route 66 sign on the bluff tops in Palisades Park, which has walking paths and ocean overlooks.Recommended for:

Santa Monica State Beach covers a lot of ground but the section where the Annenberg Community Beach House is located is the most kid friendly section of beach in the area - babies and toddlers abound and there is a place to eat.Recommended for:

Play at the beach or go to the Santa Monica Pier. The pier has an carnival-like amusement park called Pacific Park. http://www.pacpark.com. There is also a Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, which is underneath the Carousel at the pier. Great restaurants and possible celeb sightings. Bike Trail, fishing on the pier, surfing, swimming, and volleyball.

It's where I hang out. You can ride your bike there. Check out the William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davis "love nest." Eat at Back on the Beach. Order the Fred's salad.
Go a bit further north to Will Rogers State Beach if you are a good volley ball player. Just say you are a friend of Cary and Allen! They may let you play.

Beautiful beach with great "gym playground" that looks better than a lot of real gyms. Rent a bike and go for a ride. It is one of the most iconic beaches in LA because it's been featured in movies so much.

Santa Monica Beach, close to the pier, is wide and long. The beach itself is generally clean, but the water might be a bit gunky. When you get bored of the sand, there's lots to do around there. The last time I was there, Cirque de Soleil was set up in the parking lot (making parking even worse!).

If you have the money and time, just move here and not have to worry about work. There is an iron man gym in the area on the beach so you can work to your heart's content. The pier is nice and so is the sun. Wear some sunscreen and don't get burnt.
