    Zona Colonial

Zona Colonial, Santo Domingo Dominican Republic
    5
    8 reviews

It is my favorite part of Santo Domingo. It is the old part of town, built for the most part by the spanish conquerors. Nowadays its a neighborhood filled with culture, history, shops, gift shops, cafes, bars, night life, parks, colonial architecture, cigar shops, and just anything dragging the average wanderer... meaning tourists, and locals. The country's tourism is for ...

    Museo Mundo de Ambar

    Arzobispo Meriño #452
    4
    4 reviews

Of all the ambar museums on the island, this is arguably the best. Yes, you have to walk through an enormous jewelry store to get to it but once inside, it has excellent exhibits and gorgeous pieces--I learned tons just wandering through the rooms, reading informational placards here and there (Spanish and English language). Fortunately, there's no hard sell on ...

    Museo del Larimar

Arz. Meriño 452, Esqina Restauración, Santo Domingo Dominican Republic
    4
    4 reviews

This is well-thought out museum with excellent exhibits--in both English and Spanish--on the discovery, mining, and use of larimar in the DR. The only bummer about the museum is that you have to walk through an extensive jewelry store to access it; there's no hard sell but it's just so in your face, it can be off-putting.

    Quinta Dominica

    Calle Padre Billini #202
    4.5
    3 reviews

This is a nice little gallery to pop into--there is often an interesting exhibit or a lecture going on. It also has a beautiful, leafy courtyard towards the back, which is open to the public--a perfect place to catch up on postcards (old school, I know) or to relax for a while with a cool drink....

This is a great cultural locale with everything from a fabulous art gallery and a boho performance space (complete with a bar and lots of small tables) to a full-on theater. Fortaleza Ozama

Calle Las Damas at Padre Billini
    3.5
    3 reviews

The Fortaleza Ozama is an interesting stop, especially if you enjoy clambering among old military buildings, checking out cannons and rifle embrasures, and imagining what life must have been like for the soldiers who lived within these walls over 400 years ago. A short guided tour is the best way to learn about the fort--plus it's totally affordable and offered ...

    Museo Infantil Trampolin

Calle Las Damas near Calle El Conde
    4.5
    2 reviews

This is a cool museum for kids located in the heart of the Zona Colonial. It's geared more for bigger kids--ones that are into space, dinosaurs, human bodies...there is even a exhibit on children's legal rights. Displays are high-tech and very hands on; they also are in Spanish only though college-age guides walk kids through the museum, answering questions along ...

    Museo Alcazar de Colon

    Plaza Espana
    3.5
    3 reviews

This museum is definitely on the beaten path but it's kind of a strange site. For starters, it's almost a total reproduction of the original building--in the 19th century only two of it's original walls were standing (most of the renovations occurred in the 20th century). Second, it's not really clear that the items inside actually belonged to the Columbus ...
