Not that much to look at, but a richly historical place and an easy autorickshaw ride from Varanasi, the ruined Buddhist monuments at Sarnath are a must for anyone with even a passing interest in Buddhism or Indian history. The archaeological museum here houses some treasures of Buddhist sculpture.

Description

Sequentially the 3rd of the 4 major Buddhist pilgrimage sites, Sarnath (just outside of and effectively contiguous with the city of Varanasi) is where the historical Buddha is said to have preached his first sermon of Buddhist law in a deer park, setting into motion the wheel of Dharma. Today, there's little left but ruins of the once-mighty monastic complex built by the emperor Ashoka and others, but the atmosphere is serene and the monolithic Dhamekh Stupa still retains an air of spirituality, despite the touts and hawkers clustered throughout the town.
