Indulgence granted for climbing the steps on your knees. Difficult but surely rewarding. Recently however some deterioration is happening with the wooden steps which came from Jerusalem so the church is asking for some donation for its rehabilitation.

What an interesting attraction. Visitors ascend the Scala Santa on their knees, praying as they go up. You can also go up and down via normal human means via the staircases to the left and right of the main scala.

Description:

The penitent and devout follow in the steps of their savior on what was allegedly the staircase Jesus ascended on his way to trail. Pope Leo XIII deemed that those who climbed the marbled steps on their knees while praying and contemplating the Passion of the Christ could gain plenary indulgence for each of the 28 steps. Today, this practice is still observed and over two million pilgrims pray for forgiveness here every year. The holy stairs were brought from Jerusalem to Rome by St. Helena in the 4th century and now sit in a shrine located opposite the Basilica of Saint John Lateran.
