The Scottish Highlands are beautiful. The low rolling hills and lush greenery is part of the romance of this area. It is a great place to backpack, hike, bike, or explore some other way. The countryside is speckled with incredible Scottish estates and castles. Ruins are everywhere you turn. It's exactly what I had imagine Scotland to be like in my mind.

Bits of the Scottish Highlands can be seriously over-touristed, but fortunately it's possible to get away from all that.

We actually stayed in Elphin which is about 30-40 mins from Ullapool. I'd HIGHLY recommend Elphin, Lochinver and the surrounding mountain region. Fantastic climbing at the Reiff Sea Cliffs. For the more experienced climber, try Stac Pollaidh and The Old Man of Stoor. Excellent 12-hour hike from Elphin to Lochinver over the mountain Suilvan. Another great hike in the area is An Teallach. I also highly recommend buying a couple of cheap inflatable kayaks and heading down to Boat Bay where there is a suitable spot from which to launch accessible by road and a short walk, for a day of island hopping and scrambling. I'd recommend going between April and June or September/October to avoid midges. Obviously the weather in Scotland can be hit or miss, we were incredibly lucky as it was hot and sunny the whole week so it was fabulous! For the more adventurous, it's legal to wild camp in Scotland - I would very much like to go back and camp near the path from Lochinver to Suilvan, and on the cliffs near the Old Man of Stoer (close to Lochinver). The Summer Isles and Skye are apparently also well worth a visit, I've got this on my to do list!

My holiday in the highlands was one of the best holidays I've ever been on. Highly recommended!

If you go as far as Scotland, push on a little further north, to see the splendours of the Scottish Highlands! There are so many beautiful places up there. Scenic lochs and glens, glorious views and plenty of history, too. Definitely worth the long journey.

The Laggan Gaskmore Hotel (formerly known as the Laggan Country Hotel) is situated near the village of Laggan in the Cairngorm National Park in the Scottish Highlands. Its unique location offers a 360 degree view of the surrounding Cairngorm and Monadhliath Mountains and the wildlife that inhabits them. This stunning scenery is already known to millions as Glenbogle, from the BBC TV series 'Monarch of the Glen'.

Stunning, especially in September when the ground is carpeted with purple heather.
