The Secret Garden Hotel is one of my favorite places to stay in Tulum town. Tucked into a residential neighborhood, the rooms vary in style from standard hotel room to thatch-roofed loft; all, however, have an artsy, mid-century flair and comforts like high thread count sheets and wireless internet. The hotel also has an amazing central garden, which is lush and shady--the couches and hammocks make it a perfect place to just chill out. And the service is truly excellent—whether it’s the owner (who is often manning the front desk) or another staff member, I’ve always been impressed by the patience, thoroughness, and enthusiasm of them all.

This is the sort of place that has made staying in town such a good option: classy, comfortable, affordable, walking distance from restaurants and shops, and an easy drive or bike ride from the beach. Walking through the gate, it really does feel like a secret garden, with tall trees shading a long central courtyard, complete with wooden benches and a few hammocks tied between trunks. The rooms are on along the sides; they’re on the small side, but artfully decorated and remain fairly cool, even those without air conditioning. Service is super friendly. And it’s nice to be a couple blocks off the main drag; walking to and from the hotel, you realize Tulum is more than the beach and main strip. It’s a living breathing city, with corner markets, kids going to school and music drifting out of open windows.

    Description:

Secret Garden is a mid-size moderately-priced hotel in a residential neighborhood in Tulum town. Rooms are all different sizes though all are artfully decorated; air-conditioning is only available in some rooms. The large interior garden area has hammocks, couches and lots of shade trees. The hotel is located within easy walking distance to shops and restaurants. Tulum Archaeological Zone is about 3 miles north.
