Whenever I need to slip away from the city noise and frustration for an hour or two, I take a dive into what feels like a parallel universe and plant myself on a bench at Lake Shrine. Located in almost a hidden spot right off of Sunset Blvd., it's hard to even remember that this place is located near any city, let alone Los Angeles. A portion of Ghandi's ashes are on the property. There is a large lake full of 40+ year-old koi fish (they are MASSIVE--the coolest part of the experience is when there is food out for them you can feed them, and their mouths are almost human-size). There are benches in the bushes and all around this lake, and people come to meditate, read, relax, or just simply be. This place recognizes all religions, so no one is turned away or discouraged. There is a small temple where you are invited to meditate, and at the altar at the front of the room there is a photograph and/or painting of every religion's savior (Jesus, Allah, Buddha, etc.). And don't forget the gift shop--this is truly the best part!
