Nice hotel; I walked around the area and didn't feel unsafe or anything despite that it's near the Tenderloin. It's a short walk over to Union Square which was where my friend and I wanted to spend our day. Not too expensive, cute decor in the lobby. Make sure to request a room on the upper floor! The hotels in SF have smaller rooms for the most part, but I don't mind. This was better than Hotel Herbert in Union Square, where I stayed last time. Service is nice. You can also check on bags after checkout so you can spend the day in the city with your hands free.Recommended for:

Serrano Hotel was a great choice for a family to stay couple of nights. They had wine tasting and valet service for the car. Location is very good, rooms are quiet and super clean. Definitely will stay there again when coming back to San FranciscoRecommended for:

I forget why....but I believe they had a free wine service in the lobby which was pretty damned good.....and convenient for us to snatch a couple bottles on the way back to the room. The bottles of wine back in my suite were real!
There's a suite with a tub in it......enough said!
I'm going back for that one day! The beds were fluffy and there's a ton of space in that suite. If I recall through the wine induced haze I do recall there appears to have been a pseudo living room in that suite. And I'm sure there was a small ipod dock to play your music off their super small speakers.

When it takes an hour to log on to the Internet and requires the assistance of the desk clerk to do so a hotel's rating suffers even though the personnel are friendly and the rooms clean. I do wonder about the shower heads. I'm 6'2" and had to stand on my toes to adjust the shower head.

There's nothing really wrong with this place, and you can find decent rates here sometimes, but I feel like I'm grading on a curve compared to the other Kimpton hotels and this hotel just seems a little lacking. Its a little farther away from Union Square, it's a little smaller, it's a little darker, it's just a little less lovely.
So, do you need to avoid this place? Not at all. But, you should aim for something else if you can.

The location is perfect, right near Union Square. Just make sure you don't venture too far south on Taylor and end up in the Tenderloin. The theme at the Serrano is board games, and they have a few in the lobby/living room. They've also done upgrades between the first and second time I stayed there. Nicer TVs. Beds are always nice. Old-timey bath tubs. Really quaint.
