The Blue Mosque is the most famous mosque in Istanbul. There's a saying in the city that Hagia Sophia has the most brilliant interior while from outside Sultanahmet is the more impressive building. It's certainly the biggest mosque in the city and the only one that has six minarets. It's design is standard Ottoman architecture perfectly executed. It has a ...

The cistern was one of the most memorable places in Istanbul, with its immense pillars hauntingly illuminated from below. This incredibly historic place has the location of everything from movies to videogames to books, but still feels almost undiscovered by its understated entrance. Once you make past the gaudy shop and cafe at the entry, the cistern is so vast ...

The Aqueduct of Valens is certainly cool to look at but it's not something that you can easily visit. Basically a highway runs right under the aqueduct and the neighborhood in which it's located is not the safest. Your best bet may be to just snap a photo on your right to or from the airport.

The Turks have so much coastline that the thought of heading to the Black Sea for a vacation strikes them as a little odd. I, however, have been to the Black Sea in Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania. I went swimming in the sea in Sile, near Istanbul and also in Varna, Bulgaria. The water is only warm in the summer ...

These walls stood for over a thousands years and were only breached once. The Arabs, Russians, Bulgarians and even Attila the Hun tried and failed. It was built in Germany, then transported piece by piece and assembled in its current location in 1900.

Speaking about the naive and the adventurous “search of lost time”, it is impossible to not to mention Orhan Pamuk’s Museum of Innocence. This is the companion to Pamuk’s novel which translates the book into a tangible labyrinth of nostalgia, a time tunnel opening to the life in Istanbul in the second half of the 20th century.

Poor Hagia Irene never gets the attention accorded to her sister church, Hagia Sophia. It was built during the Byzantine Golden Age so it's just as old. The Turkish government doesn't help matters by closing the church to the public. If you find yourself walking through the main courtyard of Topkapi Palace, spare a moment to check out Hagia Irene.

This is the most random part of Istanbul's public-transport network, and to be honest, I was nerdy enough to make up some random excuse to ride it--it's not like it fits in really logically with major sightseeing. But you get to ride a little gondola across a gorge filled with trees--in the middle of the city! Talk about cheap thrills...

The Sultanahmet Complex is one of the greatest complexes in Istanbul. It is located in front of the Hagia Sophia, in the Sultanahmet Square. The architect of the complex is Sedefkar Mehmed Aga, who was appointed the head architect after Sinan, the most famous architect's death. Construction began with a big ceremony in 1609, and it was completed in 1616. ...
