Shakespeare in the Gardens

Varies
1 review

Great seasonal Shakespeare festival that takes place in the gardens of Cambridge colleges, usually Girton, Robinson, King's, Trinity, Johns and Downing. Usually does a mix of comedy and tragedy, but the comedies are best as the troupe performs with few props and nails the dialogue.

Great backstreet pub. Three beers from Wells & Young, who own the pub. Three beers from Banks & Taylors who run the pub and four guests on draft. Also nigh on 100 Belgian bottled beers.

    Cambridge Blue (The)

0.49 mi from Shakespeare in the Gardens

Located on a street of terraced houses, about a mile from the city center, the two-roomed Cambridge Blue has plain but comfortable decor (stripped wood floorboards), with a light and airy conservatory at the back. More than a dozen real ales add to the delightful atmosphere.

One of my favourite (if not number 1) restaurant in Cambridge. Beautiful food, relax yet intimate setting. Not cheap but not hugely expensive either. Great for a date!

Currently my favourite Cambridge pub with South African cuisine. Hot rocks to grill game (they do an excellent springbok, and there's often ostrich, as well as specialty meats of the day, usually boks), good wine, decent beer, great atmosphere off the beaten track.

Great little pub with excellent menu, outstanding beer, decent wine, nice people and wonderful atmosphere. One of the very best in Cambridge, but small and can be crowded.

Inauspicious location near a very busy intersection with an awkward internal floor plan, but back garden is tops for al fresco dining. Food is excellent and portions are impressive, but the wine is overpriced. Could do a lot worse though for date nights in Cambridge. God knows I have.

Very promising new coffee shop that does coffee right. Everything else is a bit less predictable, but they will give Savino's a run for their money and then some.

    Hot Numbers Coffee

0.49 mi from Shakespeare in the Gardens

Serving up some of the best coffee in Cambridge and a tempting selection of cakes, biscuits and sandwiches. Can get crowded on weekends, but there's outdoor seating in the summer and they've recently expanded into the art gallery next door.

I don't know if it was just that day, but it was a horrendous visit. Our order was messed up, we had to wait a while for it to be fixed, the staff were rude and the restaurant was filthy. There was litter and food all over the floor, seats and even sauce smeared on the walls! I'll obviously visit ...

Mediocre pub redeemed by nice outdoor area. Convenient to Parker's Piece. Not great, but far from actually awful. And it's not a bad place to stop en route to the rail station.

Better cafe than restaurant but the food is good and fresh and the service is decent. The location is both good and lousy. Convenient to the rail station but lousy otherwise as it is on a busy corner.

Closed now but rumoured to reopen, this was a much loved but fairly fraught Cambridge institution. Too far off the beaten path at the Grafton Centre, but one of the few places where ARU and Cam students mixed.

We needed to eat after a long day and felt that good, old fashioned fish and chips were ideal. After a 5 minute wait, we got our food and began to eat. The food was very tasty, but was very greasy (Puddles of it) and upset my stomach. I also felt that it was rather expensive for what I had.

It is a really posh seafood restaurant. My nephew suggested taking me to "the fish and chip place", so I thought it was a casual restaurant if not a fast food joint. However, when the food came, I was pleasantly surprised. The fish and chips are nicely presented with a large piece of nicely fried juicy fish on top of ...

One of the most famous pubs in Cambridge, the Eagle is always pretty busy. unlike many pubs, the Eagle has a number of small interconnected rooms that help break up the ambiance, even when it is busy. Beautiful spot for afternoon tea beneath the apple trees, and has a small display about poet and former Grantchester resident Rupert Brooke. Very popular in summer; the small car park makes getting in and out a bit of a challenge at busy times. Cycle here if you can.

Classic English pub with great beer. Even does Old Peculiar. Nice garden area as well. Local favourite near the river. Great atmosphere and not as heavily touristed as The Eagle or The Mill and/or Anchor.
