    The Bund

    161号 长乐路, Luwan, Shanghai, China
    4.5
    77 reviews

The mix of modern and art deco along the Bund makes it an architectural highlight of Shanghai and one of the better places to catch views of the city. Oddly reminiscent of Chicago. You'll definitely want to take a walk along the river.

    Shanghai Museum

201号 Renmin Avenue, Huangpu, Shanghai, China
    4
    28 reviews

This is a very good museum, second only (in my opinion) to the history museum in Xi'an. Shanghai Museum is devided into themes, making it easy to find what interests you the most. On the bottom floor the service desk hands out helpful maps and short introductions. Also on the bottom floot is the temporary exhibits. Note that security is ...

    Jade Buddha Temple

170 Anyuan Road, Shanghai, 31 China
    4
    13 reviews

Jade Buddha Temple is not as big as Jing’an Temple in Shanghai, but people come here for the Jade Buddha. It was interesting to learn that Buddhism is not a religion in particular, that it represents all Gods. People practicing Buddhism believe there are three lives, the past, the present, and the future. They light candles for the dead, tie ...

    Shanghai Circus World

2266 Gonghe Xin Lu, Zhabei, Shanghai 200073, China
    4
    3 reviews

One of many places in Shanghai where you can experience the fantastic acrobatic shows. This one is generally known to be one of the best. The somewhat more artistic expression of the show, inspired by Cirque de Soleil, is beautiful but does take time away from actual performances. Surroundings are nice, with a much larger lobby than any of the ...

This somewhat Disney-esque area has a nice mix of cafes, bars, restaurants, and shops. One of the more pleasant areas to stroll and enjoy without having to worry about traffic.

    French Concession

    中国上海市卢湾区, Jianguo Middle Rd,
    4.5
    30 reviews

The French Concession struggles to hang on to a bit of Shanghai's old world charm. The combination of nice architecture and a greenery makes this one of the more attractive parts of the city. Definitely a must-see on the tourist circuit.

    Oriental Pearl TV Tower

2号 Lujiazui Ring Road, Pudong, Shanghai, China
    4
    72 reviews

Great views of the city. Not the tallest building but has one of the best locations -- right next to the river between the Bund and Shanghai's commercial center. I really enjoyed it until my husband took a closer look at the construction and pointed out a few flaws. That was quite a few years ago and the place is ...

    Qibao Ancient Town

    Minzhu Road, Minhang, Shanghai, China
    4
    6 reviews

Qibao makes for a good excursion from downtown, and is reasily reached by metro. Qibao is very much like the many other water towns in the river delta around Shanghai, with old 17th century houses and narrow canals. However the proximity to Shanghai and metro access also means that crowds can be large here, so try to avoid going in ...

    Jin Mao Tower

2号 Century Avenue, Pudong, Shanghai, China

    16 reviews

The Jinmao Tower observation deck on the 88th floor is my favourite of the current three megastructures from where you can enjoy stunning views of Shanghai. Although you don't go as high up in the Jinmao as in the Finance Tower (340 meters v. 474 meters) I don't think there's much difference between the two different heights, but the Jinmao ...

    Fabric Market Shanghai

399号 Lujiabang Road, Huangpu, Shanghai, China
    4
    14 reviews

The Shanghai Fabric and Tailor market is where you custom order business suits, shirts, pants, even coats and women's dresses, for a fraction of the cost you would get them for in most western countries. It’s mostly targeted for the expat community, willing to spend on tailored clothing. For instance, a nice business shirt can cost 150 to 200 RMB ...

    Jing'an Temple Square

静安寺, Nanjing Road (West), Jing'an, Shanghai, China

Attractive temple which contrasts sharply against the surrounding modernity. Unlikely to impress you if you've spent a lot of time in Asia but still a nice spot.

    M50创意园

50号 Moganshan Road, Putuo, Shanghai, China
    3.5
    2 reviews

This place is very interesting, especially for people who are into art. An old factory building has been converted into an art gallery with dozens of artists displaying their art, and in some cases work on new art in the shop. The cool thing about M50 Art District is that you can find a wide range of both more traditional ...

Completely faux but still throughly enjoyable. A good place to pick up street food and do a little people watching. Just steps from Yuyuan Gardens. Makes for a nice pit stop.

    Shanghai Tianzifang

    Shanghai, China
    4.5
    2 reviews

Wonderful surprises are just waiting to be found around every corner of the labyrinthine alleyways that make up Shanghai's Tianzifang art area. Souvenir shops, art galleries and small clothing stores abound. There are also a number of decent restaurants, including Origin, a cute little organic cafe. The best food (and prices) however are found in less touristy areas of the ...

Packed with retailers, this is where the Shanghainese come to shop. Neon lights, concrete, and some people watching. I find it less pleasant than other areas but no doubt it is an important artery for the city.

An important shopping and business center -- think of it is Times Square for Shanghai. Interesting people watching with a lot of activity but not particularly picturesque.

    Shanghai Grand Theater Gallery

286号 Huangpi North Road, Huangpu, Shanghai, China
    3.5
    7 reviews

I've seen a couple of shows here, Hairspray, Mama Mia, Riverdance and even a YoYo Ma concert. It's a nice venue-splurge for the good seats and be sure to arrive to the show on time - if you're late you'll need to wait off to the right and watch a monitor until they open up the seating.
