Shenzhen has really gone a long way from its more provincial past to it being one of the fastest growing cities in all of China. Also being a special economic / administrative region (SAR, like HKG) The new economic center is quite spectacular with international luxury brand hotels and modern sky scrapers.

The main attraction here is the shopping. If you know what you are coming for, then it can be really good. Everyone is going to come after you like vultures to make a sale. Stand your ground and do be afraid to haggle with the price. If they don't budge, you can leave. If they really want your business they will work with you or someone else will.

Shenzhen has many facets that makes this city great/terrible at the same time. From HK perspective, this is the closest city to china and is easily accessible by the subway. Also, since prices are cheaper in china, this is very beneficial to Honkeys who want to travel, shop and get foot masages for cheap.
From a China perspective, this city is rather expensive and inline with Beijing and Shanghai. Not that many locals actually visit Shenzhen, but merely travel through. (tip, if you will do alot of china flights, it is cheaper to go through shenzhen than HK, easily saves you 5-600rmb)
And that is the type of people you will see. Either they work in the factories in neighbouring towns, or you see expats flying out of shenzhen airport, or even ex-pats managing their corporate satellite office in china.
This is not a city with much emphasis on tourism.. But this city does offer fine cuisine, brand name shopping and cheap massages.

I like Shenzhen because it is way more down to earth than HK, but still has a decent standard of living. However, it is enormous, and traffic is killer, so you need to plot your time there strategically if you don't want to spend half of your time in transit.

I participated in the 2011 World University Games in Shenzhen representing the United States of America (water polo). Alphabetically we were one of the last teams to enter the opening ceremonies, and this picture captures the moment as we walked into the sold out football sized stadium! An unforgettable moment that few people have experienced or even witnessed!

I'm probably way too biased, having spent a lot of time here, but I think Shenzhen is pretty remarkable. At face value, it is a soulless city populated with people hellbent on making money. Dig a little deeper and you'll find an extremely diverse city with great shopping, eating, and nightlife. Just east of downtown are pristine beaches while Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Macau are ridiculously close - all about an hour and some change away, depending on how you travel. Not to mention that a little over 30 years ago, Shenzhen was just a small fishing village of a 1,000 or so people. Now there are about 10 million living here! The newness of the city and its mind boggling growth are reasons enough to check this place out, especially if you are into skateboarding.
